Opera Introduces Browser-Integrated AI Agent

The Browser Operator is a native AI agent that can perform tasks for users directly within the Opera browser with agentic AI advancements while preserving user privacy.

“For more than 30 years, the browser gave you access to the web, but it has never been able to get stuff done for you. Now it can. This is different from anything we’ve seen or shipped so far. The Browser Operator we’re presenting today marks the first step towards shifting the role of the browser from a display engine to an application that is agentic and performs tasks for its users,” said Krystian Kolondra, EVP.

How Browser Operator Works

Unlike others, it is not a separate tool. Instead, it’s a browser extension itself. This empowers users to automate repetitive tasks, including completing online forms, shopping online, and searching web content.  It processes different tasks within the browser itself. 

According to the Opera website, its concept is to allow users to explain what they need the AI to do in natural language, and then the browser will start performing the tasks for them.   

It understands written instructions in natural language via a browser client’s local resources. The “Composer” processes the information to complete a task. 

The Operator pauses to ask users to take action whenever it has to confirm an order, fill in a form, or perform any other sensitive task.

For example, if the Operator encounters a sensitive step while performing a task (e.g., approving an order or entering payment details), it pauses and requires user input. Users can also take over the process anytime. 

And the best part? The Operator works in the same environment as the user: the browser. The AI doesn’t need a cloud server or a virtual machine.

• Interaction with page elements: It can interact with elements invisible from the user’s view, including verification dialogs or cookie popups, resulting in seamless web content access.

It’s available as an upcoming functionality preview and is expected to be launched soon as part of its AI feature drop program.
