In 2024, significant advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related fields dominated the technology landscape, from OpenAI’s continued dominance, despite AI going the open-source route, to AI-integrated consumer electronics and AI’s increasing role in the medical field. Here’s a quick look into the top 5 AI and technology stories of 2024.
1. OpenAI Continued Phenomenal Push Beyond ChatGPT

OpenAI knew it had to keep innovating—never resting on its laurels—and push its ChatGPT beyond the reach of rapidly increasing competition.
First stop, Open AI’s 01 Model “Reasoning Series.” It allowed them to receive more accurate responses to complex prompts.
Unsurprisingly, it became the go-to AI tool for reasoning tasks and coding. Members of the scientific community loved it, too.
OpenAI also introduced SearchGPT before seamlessly integrating it into ChatGPT. This move empowered the Chatbot to generate credible and duly refined search results.
Moreover, OpenAI launched Canvas, adding a workstation-like pane to ChatGPT. The feature enabled users to update coding projects and documents dynamically.
And before the world bade farewell to 2024, OpenAI unleashed its AI-powered video generator, Sora, which content creators lauded for its well-thought-out storyboarding and intuitive features.
2. Large Language Models (LLMs) Continued Expanding

Meta recognized more and more users of Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta products (including other platforms) demand more responsive (and accurate) AI interactions.
In April 2024, Meta introduced Llama 3 before quickly following it up with Llama 3.1 and pushing its LLM to 405 billion parameters.
It wasn’t enough. Meta had to appeal to enterprises, too. So, it launched Llama’s 3.3 version before the fireworks of 2024-2025.
Other brands joined the fray. Alibaba had Owen-2.5, while NVidia introduced Nemotron-70B, DeepSeek launched V2.5 and R1-Lite Preview. Even small ventures like Nous Research chipped in, and Mistral, from France, wasn’t about to be outdone.
3. Consumer Electronics Welcomed AI

Apple rolled out its Apple Intelligence in 2024 and sought to elevate user experiences with more responsive and intuitive interactions with Siri by incorporating ChatGPT into Apple’s latest devices.
It signified a broader trend of embedding AI into everyday devices and making advanced technology more accessible to everyone,
4. Medical Advancements Were More Robust with AI

Imagine being able to screen for cancer and hereditary or genetically transmitted diseases. That’s the AI – specifically Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold – promise to the healthcare industry.
Medical and healthcare technology firms continue to integrate AI into product development. They want to accelerate drug discovery and enhance personalized medicine while guaranteeing more effective and precise treatments.
5. Google Gemini Reestablished Presence
Many criticized Google when it introduced Gemini. They scored Google’s odd image generations and other less-than-appealing features. Google learned its lessons and came back roaring in 2024.
This time, the tech giant unleashes Gemini 2.0 Flash and Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking to help content creators, businesses, and developers advance their projects beyond completion.
